Snapped on ordinary nights, not special occasions, and arranged roughly in the order of an evening: the street, the dining room, the plates, the tea counter, then the card room after dark. Click on any of them to look more closely, and have a squint at the corners, where the best bits usually hide.

About the pictures

Who took these and why

Most of these were taken by the staff on their phones, between jobs, with the permission of everyone in the frame. We didn't stage anything, and apart from a bit of brightening so you can see into the corners, nothing has been touched up. If you spot yourself, give us a wave next time you're in.

We've kept them in the order a night runs, so you can follow along: the street, the lit windows, the dining room before the first guests, the plates as they leave the pass, the tea counter and finally the card room with its lamps and green felt. A photo can't show the hum of a full room, but it can show the care.

If you'd rather not appear on the website, just tell us, and the picture will be gone within a day. Write to the address on the contact page or catch Vanessa at the door. No questions asked, no hard feelings, and a free pot of tea for the trouble.

A few of the pictures were taken by guests who asked if they could, and we said yes on the spot. One of the best, of the long table just before the soup arrived, was snapped by a farmer who'd come in for the first time that evening and who has been back every Thursday since. We like it when guests take ownership of the room.

And if you've got a photo of a good night here that you'd like to share, bring it in. We keep a folder beside the bookings notebook, and the best ones end up on the wall in the front hall.

Three rooms we're especially proud of

Floor-to-ceiling bookshelves overlooking cafe tables and chairs
Two warming lamps glowing above the kitchen service counter
Comfortable lounge seating beside a bright curtained window
