Eighteen and over
Adults only
The card room and these pages are for grown-ups. The rule's short, it applies to everyone, and this page explains how it works at the door.
The rule
Eighteen is eighteen
To come into the card room, sit at a table or enter a tournament, you need to be eighteen or older. That's the whole rule. Younger guests are welcome in the dining room until half past six with an adult, but the door to the back is closed to them, and it stays that way.
We apply it the same way to everyone, and we ask everyone. Regulars, friends of the staff and visitors from a long way off all get the same polite question at the door, and nobody's meant to take it as an insult. Vanessa checks at the front, and the dealers check again if there's any doubt at the table.
I know it can be annoying when you're nearly there, or you've left your licence at home, or your mum's at the table with you. We still can't make exceptions. The rule exists because card games are an adult pastime and the law says so, and it only works if it's kept without fail.
At the door
ID, the web and what happens next
A current driver licence, passport or recognised proof-of-age card is fine; photocopies and photos on a phone aren't.
Expired documents can't be accepted, whatever the story, and nobody gets in on a promise to bring ID next time.
If you've forgotten your ID you can still have dinner in the dining room, but you can't go through to the card room.
Under-eighteens can eat with an adult until half past six, and they're welcome to come back on their eighteenth birthday.
There's no way to play online at all, so nobody can get round the door with a phone or a laptop at home.
If a message or a website offers games in the name of Waratah Terrace, it isn't ours, and we'd like to hear about it.
The rule is the same on a quiet Tuesday as on a full Saturday, and it's the same for staff and guests alike.
Questions about the rule can go to Owen Byrne at the door, and nobody will think any less of you for asking.
Are you eighteen or over?
Dinner's for everyone, but the card room and these pages are for adults. We ask each guest once before they go on.
We ask everybody. Nothing here is played for money, and nothing is played online.
